| Objectives:
1. Understand the role of occupational/physical/speech therapy,
rehabilitation psychology and the multidisciplinary rehabilitation
team in treating disabled patients in acute and chronic
care settings.
2. Construct a comprehensive problem list for a patient
with a disability. This list should include long-range medical,
functional, psychological and social issues.
3. Be able to perform a manual muscle test and a comprehensive
back examination.
4. Be able to discuss strategies for chronic pain management.
Expectations:
During
the rehabilitation portion of the clerkship, students will
have exposure to a wide range of clinical problems: chronic
pain, stroke, brain and spinal cord trauma, cerebral palsy,
spina bifida, and degenerative disease of the spine. We
hope that by the end of the week on rehabilitation medicine,
that students will understand the functional implications
of these neurological diseases and understand how a multidisciplinary
rehabilitation team operates. In each student's professional
future a number of patients will require rehabilitation.
This one-week experience will give students an idea about
when to consult a rehabilitationist and what to expect.
Students will divide
their time between outpatient and inpatient activities.
Students will be assigned one patient already present on
the rehabilitation inpatient service to observe and evaluate.
At the end of each week on the rehabilitation service, students
will be asked to discuss this patient in detail. Students
will not need to write daily progress notes. During the
outpatient portion, students will see other patients on
a one-time basis. Students will learn from contact with
these patients how take a pertinent history and how to perform
a pertinent physical examination.
Students
are also expected to complete rehabilitation
medicine readings during this week of the clerkship.
